Online Security Tips for Accessing Personal Information

Protecting your personal and financial information online is more important than ever. Follow these key security tips to keep your data safe:

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

  • When creating passwords for online accounts, your passwords should always meet or exceed industry security standards. NWA’s password requirements exceed industry standards.
  • Avoid using any personal or identifying information in your password.
  • Avoid using common sequences for numbers.
  • Use a longer password.
  • Make sure to update your password regularly.
  • Avoid using passwords that are too similar to ones you have used previously.
  • Consider using a password manager to keep track of complex passwords securely.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

  • If available, always enable two-factor authentication for any accounts you create online. NWA requires two-factor authentication.
  • Two-factor authentication includes an extra layer of security, requiring you to enter a code that was sent to your phone or email when logging in.

3. Be Wary of Phishing Emails or Texts

  • Never click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious senders.
  • If you receive an email that is suspicious, make sure to verify the following:
    • The sender’s email address
    • Hover over links to see where the link will take you
  • Do not share any personal information via email or text.
  • Legitimate benefit providers will never ask for your Social Security number, or full bank information via email or text.

4. Access Personal Information from Secure Devices

  • Only log in from personal or trusted devices with up-to-date antivirus software.
  • Keep your operating system up to date.
  • Install security software.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi or shared computers when accessing sensitive information.
  • Set up screen lock on your mobile device.

5. Log Out After Each Session

  • Always log out of your account when you are done, especially on shared or public devices.

6. Monitor Your Account Regularly

  • Check your account activity periodically to make sure there are no unauthorized changes or access.
  • Account activity may come in the form of email communications.
  • Report anything unusual to your plan administrator or provider right away.

7. Enable Alerts and Stay Informed

  • Enable email notifications to be alerted if anyone is logging into your account or for notifications on any recent changes to your account.
  • Ensure your email address and phone number on your account are current so you do not miss important security alerts or updates.

8. Enable Biometrics

  • If available, enable biometrics. NWA has biometric options on NWA Mobile.
  • Since your biometrics are stored only on your device and never shared, this method is safer and more convenient than traditional login options.
